10 FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what communities, funders and partners ask us most.

We design and deliver distributed hybrid renewable energy systems (DHRES) for off-grid and underserved communities, alongside environmental impact assessment, engineering consultancy, procurement and maintenance, and applied research — taking a project from first assessment through to lasting impact.
We focus on rural and off-grid communities across Nigeria, and we work with partners to extend clean, affordable power more widely. If you are unsure whether your location fits, get in touch and we will advise.
We start with a demand and resource survey — mapping how much power a community needs and the solar and other resources available — then model and specify a hybrid system to match demand, resources and budget, with job and impact figures estimated up front.
Yes. We carry out Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), environmental auditing, and baseline and liability assessments, so projects advance responsibly and in line with regulation.

Data & Insights

The numbers behind the mission.

Nigeria carries the world's largest electricity access gap. These figures — drawn from the World Bank, ESMAP, and peer-reviewed research — show why decentralised hybrid renewables matter, and where the need is greatest.

Progress, but slow

Access is rising — just not fast enough

Nigeria's electricity access climbed from about 55% in 2020 to 61% in 2023. Real progress, but population growth keeps pace with new connections, so the absolute number of people in the dark has barely moved.

At current trends, universal access by 2030 (SDG 7) is out of reach without a dramatic acceleration — exactly the gap decentralised solutions are built to close.

2020 2021 2022 2023 55.4 59.5 60.5 61.2
The last mile

A deep urban–rural divide

Cities enjoy near-universal supply, but in rural areas fewer than a third of people are connected — and roughly 73% live entirely off the grid. This is where the access gap concentrates.

Extending the central grid to scattered, low-density communities is rarely economic. Distributed hybrid systems reach these households directly, at the right scale.

Electricity access by area
Urban areas~89%
Rural areasunder 30%
Rural population off-grid~73%
Power & health

When the lights go out, so does care

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, close to 60% of health care facilities lack reliable electricity. Without it, vaccines spoil, deliveries happen by lantern, and diagnostic equipment sits idle.

Electrifying a rural clinic with a solar-hybrid system is one of the highest-impact uses of distributed energy there is — the through-line of our work in rural Nigeria.

Sub-Saharan health facilities
~60%lack reliable power

Nearly six in ten clinics and hospitals operate without dependable electricity — directly limiting the care they can provide.

Why hybrid, why solar

An abundant resource, an underused grid

Nigeria's central grid delivers only a fraction of its installed capacity, leaving even connected households with frequent blackouts. Meanwhile the country receives 3.5–7.0 kWh of solar energy per square metre every day.

That mismatch is the case for decentralised, solar-led hybrid systems: reliable local power that doesn't wait on a strained national grid.

National grid: capacity vs. reality (GW)
Installed capacity~13 GW

Typically delivered~5.8 GW

Solar resource: 3.5–7.0 kWh/m²/day — among the best on the continent.

About these figures. They are household survey estimates from the Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys of 2018 and 2023–24 (National Population Commission and ICF), obtained from The DHS Program. State figures carry sampling error, so small differences between states or years should not be over-read. They measure households, so they differ from the World Bank's population-based figure quoted elsewhere on this site. These are not Safe Earth Consults project locations.
